NOHS Family and Consumer Science Classes
The available FACS class at North Oconee High School is Early Childhood Education. We enusre that every student has to opportunity to take an ECE course and learn more about child development and the skills of an educator! Students are also highly encouraged to become more involved with their career pathway through joining FCCLA, as the organization is intra - curricular within the classroom.
ECE I:
- Semester, 1 credit
- Grades 9-12
- What is it?
- This course will provide students with knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors associated with supporting and promoting optimal growth and development of infants and children. Enrolled students will participate in a multitude of activities including: Egg Baby Project, individual/group presentations (public speaking), and creative hands-on projects like Toy/Game Design, Learning Centers crafts and multimedia assignments(pictures/video recording).
ECE II:
- Semester, 1 credit
- Grades 10-12
- What is it?
- This course will provide students with the best practices and applications of developmental issues in today’s early childhood care. Enrolled students will participate in individual/group presentations (public speaking), lesson planning, creative hands-on projects and multimedia assignments. Students will obtain an internship at a local preschool or elementary school throughout the duration of the semester. Students enrolled in this course will need to have reliable transportation to and from their site placement 2 days a week.
ECE III:
- Semester, 1 credit
- Grades 10-12
- What is it?
- This course stresses observing, analyzing and classifying activities of an early childhood educator. Enrolled students will develop an individual portfolio that showcases their work and justifies their knowledge of each standard in this pathway. Students will obtain an internship at a local preschool or elementary school throughout the duration of the semester. Students enrolled in this course will need to have reliable transportation to and from their site placement 3 days a week. Students who pass the End of Pathway Assessment, complete internship hours and develop a practicum portfolio can obtain college credit at various colleges throughout Georgia.
What happens after you've completed the ECE Pathway?
Work Based Learning:
- Juniors and seniors with a specific career focus
- Work at an approved work site in career field
- What is it?
- After completing the Early Childhood Education Pathway students have the opportunity to work with professionals while receiving course credits. Students apply the content they learned in the CTAE classes to gain experiences and knowledge in the career field (while getting a jump start on internship hours).
Dual Enrollment:
- ECCE 1103 Child, Growth, and Development
- ECCE 1105 Health, Safety, and Nutrition
- What is it?
- Students who complete the high school CTAE Early Childhood Education Pathway will have an opportunity to pass an articulation exam to earn articulated credit for ECCE 1101. Upon earning credit for ECCE 1101 and completion of the two courses below, students will earn the Early Childhood Care and Education Basics Technical College Certificate of Credit (TCC). This TCC is the minimum requirement to be a Lead teacher at a licensed childcare center in Georgia.
